Alex C. Spyropoulos, MD received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque, NM.
Dr. Spyropoulos is a Professor of Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, System Director of Anticoagulation and Clinical Thrombosis Services for Northwell Health in NY. He is also a Professor of the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine. He is co-chair of the Council on Leadership of Thrombosis at Northwell Health.
He has been involved as Principal Investigator, Scientific Committee member, Steering and Executive Committee member, or member of Data Safety Monitoring Board in multiple international, multicenter randomized trials in thrombosis and anticoagulant therapy, including venous thromboprophylaxis and antithrombotics in COVID-19 and perioperative antithrombotic therapy. He is a founding member of ATLAS, a US-based ARO-CRO in thrombosis-related research.
He is a Steering Committee member or Chair for multiple organizations, including World Thrombosis Day, North American Thrombosis Forum, and the World Health Organization, and co-author of the 8th, 9th and co-chair of the 10th 2022 ACCP Guidelines on Perioperative Antithrombotic Therapy and co-chair of the International Union of Angiology Guidelines on Venous Thromboembolism. He is Lead for the 2022 ISTH Antithrombotic Guidelines in COVID-19 inpatients and Chair of the same 2022 ISTH Antithrombotic Guidance Statements in COVID-19 inpatients . He is a member of the Global COVID-19 Thrombosis Collaborative Group.
He is on the editorial staff for Hospital Medicine, Senior Editor for the Journal of Clinical Medicine, and Associate Editor for the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. He is a reviewer for many journals. Dr. Spyropoulos’ research studies, articles, letters, and editorials have been published in over 310 peer-reviewed journals.
