Dr. Victor Tapson, MD, FCCP, FRCP
Brief Bio
Dr. Tapson established the venous thromboembolism, pulmonary hypertension and lung transplant programs at Duke University in the 1990s. He has done thousands of inpatient and outpatient consultations for these diseases and has served on steering committees for single center and world-wide clinical trials. He wrote the first set of diagnostic guidelines for acute PE (American Thoracic Society 1999). He served on the ACCP VTE consensus statement multiple times. In 2010, he was elected to the Royal College of Physicians.
Dr .Tapson left Duke for an exciting opportunity at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in 2014, and was actively involved in the PERT Consortium, serving as its first elected president. He served on the steering committee for the NIH-sponsored ACTT Covid trials. During the first 14 months of the pandemic he served 24/7 as Cedars' primary PERT faculty. He was PI or co-PI for VTE registries including DVT-FREE, IMPROVE, NABOR, ENDORSE, the TAFIa clinical trial, and the BiO2 IVCF study, as well as for FLARE, EXTRACT, RESCUE and conceived and served as PI for OPTALYSE PE. He has been a committee member for the World Pulmonary Hypertension Consensus Guidelines since 2003 and served on the CTEPH subcommittee. He has published invited reviews on acute PE in the NEJM, and authored VTE topics for UpToDate for 25 years. In Oct 2021, he accepted a position with Inari Medical as VP of Medical Affairs. This was prompted by Inari's tremendous passion and innovation, with their progressive approach to undertaking VTE clinical trials, and their dedication to VTE program building. inari was recently purchased by Stryker. Dr. Tapson serves on a panel for the NBA for VTE issues. He continues as Professor of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai and continues to see VTE patients and design trials for acute VTE.
